Venison French Dip

Easy, delicious sandwiches with minimal effort!

I love venison, and making a venison roast in the crock pot is one of my absolute favorite recipes.  However, there’s only so many times you can make roast with potatoes and carrots before the family starts giving you those sideways looks.  So, I started searching for more recipes to use those beautiful cuts of meat.

Enter the venison French dip sandwich!  This recipe is very similar to standard roast recipe – you use the slow cooker, your house smells amazing, and you melt the fat and silver skin within the roast into a wonderful basting liquid.  The difference here is turning the meat into wonderful little sandwiches that can be paired with a variety of sides.

This recipe is wonderfully simple, yet very delicious.  I made very slight modifications to the original recipe from bunsinmyoven.com.  Here is a link to the original recipe there – https://www.bunsinmyoven.com/french-dip-sandwich/

Good luck, and good eating!

Ingredients

  • Venison Roast
  • 2 cans condensed French onion soup – 21 oz
  • 1 cup stock (beef or venison stock is best)
  • 1 package Hawaiian rolls
  • 1 package provolone cheese slices

Step 1 – Rinse off the roast, and place it in the slow cooker.

Step 2 – Pour the condensed French onion soup and stock over the roast.  Turn the slow cooker on low for at least 8 hours.

Step 3 – Take 3 cups of juice from the slow cooker and ladle it into a small pot.  Set the pot on the stove top on medium heat.  Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.  Let it simmer until it’s reduced by 1/2 to roughly 1 1/2 cups.  This will provide a wonderful dipping sauce with an intensified flavor.

Step 4 – Remove the roast from the slow cooker to a plate or cutting board.  Shred the meat into the proper size pieces for sandwiches.

Step 5 – Remove the Hawaiian rolls from the package and slice in half.  Place the bottoms in a casserole dish or other oven-safe pan.  Pile meat onto each roll, and top them with the slices of provolone cheese.  Place the tops of the rolls on top.

Step 6 – Melt 2 tbsp of butter in the microwave in a small cup.  Brush the melted butter on top of the sandwiches.

Step 7 – Heat the oven to 350°F.  Place the pan of sandwiches in the oven for 5 minutes, or until the cheese begins to melt.

Step 8 – Serve the sandwiches warm with the dipping sauce on the side.  You can pair these with just about any side dish – french fries or chips to be simple, roasted or steamed veggies for a more elegant touch.
