The SBO Ripper – Stories Behind the Design

Stories describing the inspiration behind the features of the SBO Ripper pot call.

Ripper turkey pot call details

The Ripper pot call is a great sounding, and great looking, piece of hunting equipment.  But why does it have a spiral design on the bottom?  And what’s with the two playing surfaces?  Well, the best way we can describe these features is by telling stories.  Hopefully these stories will give you more context into why we included these features in the call and when they will be most helpful.  We hope to hear some of your own stories of success once you get your hands on the Ripper!

Spiral Bottom Pattern with Integrated Sound Slots

It’s a windy day, and you climb a hill to look out and try to find some turkeys out in the open. Across a couple of fields, you see a flock, and there’s one in full strut. You use the terrain and trees to get within 200 yards, but the wind is howling and that ole gobbler is henned up tight. You just can’t see how you’ll pull him away from those pretty little ladies. He’s strutting his stuff, surrounded by 5 big hens, and he’s fat and happy. There’s no way to sneak up on all of those sharp eyes, so you’ll have to figure something out.

You hit a yelp on the call, and the gobbler doesn’t even break stride. However, you notice one of the older hens sticks her head up and looks around. It looks like she heard something, but she can’t really locate it. You turn the bottom of the call so it’s pointing directly at the hen, and hit a series of the nastiest, most challenging clucks you can muster. The feathers on the back of her head stand straight up, and it’s clear you’ve really made her mad.

She starts cutting and putting and heading towards you, preparing to shut you up for good. With the bottom of the call still pointed straight at her, you mimic her exactly, which is just riling her up even more. She’s giving you a real turkey cussing, and she’s coming to look for a fight. Behind her, that ole gobbler finally breaks out of strut, wondering where his lovely lady is headed. He starts tagging along behind her like he’s on a tow rope, and they’re both headed your way. Now all you have to do is click the safety off and get ready to watch the flop.

The spiral design on the bottom of the SBO Ripper is for more than just looks. The integrated sound slots give you a great resonating chamber to enhance the sound of your calls. Whether you use the top playing surface or the bottom surface, those slots built into the ripsaw-style design take your clucks and yelps and amplify them, giving off those great turkey calls you need in the woods. Whether you’re challenging the boss hen or bringing in a lonely tom, the SBO Ripper has the devastating sound you need to reach out and get their attention.

Ergonomic Finger Grooves

It’s mid-morning, and you haven’t heard a gobble since fly down. You have no idea where they all went, but those birds really shut their mouths once their feet hit the ground. You’re fighting off sleep and trying to figure out your next move when you finally hear it.

Through the woods, you can just make out the sound of spitting and drumming, so you know the gobbler is close. You need just a couple of perfect putts to let him know where you are. With your eyes still focused on where he will come from, you reach down and pick up your call. Your fingers slip naturally around the call and into the finger grooves. Even without looking, you know you’ve got the perfect hold on the call, with your fingers along the edge. With extreme confidence, you place your striker on the upper edge and hit those two sweet, soft clucks you needed. You set the call back down, adjust your gun, and get settled just as a big red head emerges from behind a tree. He’s at 60 yards and closing quickly.

The outer edge of the SBO Ripper is designed to comfortably fit your fingers. Even if your fingers are dripping with sweat, the ergonomic design of the call allows you to hold it with the same firmness and your fingers positioned around the edge perfectly every time. This consistent hold means you’ll have consistent calling quality, and every cluck, yelp, or purr will get the best resonance and sound quality. Consistency in sound quality is vital when there’s no room for error in the field. Get perfect notes every time with the dependable ergonomic design of the SBO Ripper.

Two Playing Surfaces

Across the field, you can see the tom, and he’s strutting for all he’s worth. He’s huge, with a rope of a beard dragging in front of him. You give him your sexiest, nastiest yelps and clucks, and he drops out of strut for a second. However, he has a couple of hens with him already and doesn’t come your way. You give him another round, talking the sexiest turkey language you can muster. Again he drops his tail but doesn’t come your way.

You begin to get frustrated. “What is going on, this worked last week. Why won’t he come this way?” You don’t want to reach for a different call since the tom might see your movement and bolt for the woods. Then you remember the bottom playing surface on your Ripper pot call. You gently flip the call over and let out a couple of clucks. Coming from the bottom of the call, these are softer, more mellow calls, and it must be just what that ole tom wanted to hear. He drops out of strut again, but this time is different. His tail feathers droop a little further, and his head raises a little higher. He seemed to really like that softer, easier, nicer sounding hen.

You let out a 7 note yelp, and he turns and heads your way. As he’s closing the distance, he drops below a rise in the ground long enough for you to raise your gun. He’s really closing the distance now and comes to full strut at 35 yards. You watch him for a minute, as the sunlight shines off his tail feathers. He sticks his head out to gobble, and you hit him with a full load of #4 shot right in the beak.

The SBO Ripper features two playing surfaces to provide you with a variety of turkey sounds. You can flip it back and forth to sound like two different turkeys talking back and forth, or you can use the side that gets the best response in the field. The top side gives you a louder, sharper sound, while the bottom playing surface is designed for quieter, more mellow calls. Having the SBO Ripper in your hand is like having two calls at your fingertips at all times.
