Features of a Duck Call

Why does a Southbound Outdoors duck call look so sexy?  What’s with all the curves?  Why do you have double lanyard grooves on every call?  Why does everyone want the “coke bottle” style mouthpiece?  We’ve heard all these questions, and the best way we know how to answer them is with stories.  So kick back, relax, and enjoy these short story descriptions of some of the features of the SBO line of duck calls.

Double Lanyard Grooves

  • Protect both parts of your call
  • Never lose an insert again
We’ve all been there.
It might be after slogging through the woods with 3 dozen decoys on your back. Or maybe you had a really rough early-morning boat ride through the slough out to the blind.
Whatever happened, somehow the insert is gone from your call. You search frantically through the boat, backtrack your trail, but no luck. It felt like a good tight fit, so you didn’t think twice about only putting a lanyard loop around the barrel. You wanted more calls on your lanyard anyway and needed those extra loops for that 5th single-reed option. Now, you just have a pretty piece of hollow, colored acrylic hanging around your neck.
Each SBO call features lanyard grooves on both the barrel and the insert. It may not seem like a big deal, but trust us, lose an insert once, and you’ll never forget to double-lanyard your call again.

Comfortable Mouth Piece

  • Comfortable mouth piece for less lip fatigue
  • Call more without wearing out
  • Keep calling flock after flock
Some days, those ducks just won’t commit. They circle and circle, seemingly at the same height and distance. Finally, they drop in and you scratch out a couple. You’re still catching your breath, and the next group shows up.  They’re not coming in on their own, so you need those hail calls now.  You raise the call back up to your lips, and get after them again.
With our comfortably-designed mouth piece, you’ll be able to maintain your calling prowess all day, even when the ducks are making you really work for it.

Ergonomic Finger Grooves

  • Get your quacks out faster
  • No more fumbling to grab your call
  • No more calls slipping in your grip
  • Get more consistent calling routines with more consistent holds and proper lip pressure
“Ducks out front!  Call man, call!”
Your buddy wasn’t watching on his end, and the ducks are already out front? You reach down while watching the ducks, fumbling through your lanyard trying to grasp your call and get it up to your mouth.
Once you get the call to your lips, you have to adjust your grip again before you can let out that perfect comeback call to turn those tail feathers around. By the time you get the call up to your lips and gripped correctly, the ducks are already over the trees and looking at the next guy’s spread.
The finger groove on an SBO duck call’s insert will help you find and grip your call faster. The slight taper makes sure you grasp the call correctly and quickly every time. It’s comfortable and subtle, but we need every edge we can get against those wiley ole ducks.

The design of an SBO duck call is not by accident.  The features incorporated into the call are purposeful and meaningful.  We hope these stories help you relate to the decisions we made during the call design process.
